Mannath Padmanabhan

Mannathu Padmanabhan (1878–1970), also known as Mannam, was a visionary social reformer, freedom fighter, and the founder of the Nair Service Society (NSS) in 1914.  Born on 2 January 1878 in Perunna, Kottayam, he dedicated his life to uplifting the Nair community, challenging caste discrimination, and promoting education and social justice in Kerala.

His contributions extended beyond community organization to include anti-untouchability movements like the Vaikom Satyagraha and Savarnajatha, which led to the Temple Entry Proclamation in Travancore.  He was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, adopted Satyagraha as a tool for moral resistance, and served as a member of the Travancore Legislative Assembly before playing a pivotal role in the formation of Kerala Congress in 1964.

Mannathu Padmanabhan received the Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the title Bharata Kesari (Lion of India) for his lifetime of service.  His legacy is commemorated annually on Mannam Jayanti (2 January), and he passed away on 25 February 1970 at the age of 92, leaving behind a lasting impact on Kerala's social and political landscape.
